Blog #4 Jigsawing

Jigsawing is a relatively new concept in the world of teaching (15 years or so it's been used but really gained research-based acceptance in the past decade). How could you see using this concept in your future classroom? What do you feel are necessary components to jigsawing? i.e. Visual vs. no visual, tight concise concepts versus just conversational feedback...share what you feel would make it work better for you or what has/does work so far.
Post by Thursday Feb. 23rd at class time and respond by class next Tuesday, Feb. 28th.

  1. I love Jigsawing. It hold students accountable for ding their part because their classmates depend on them for the information. I would use this in my classroom because it minimizes the amount of reading and allows students to learn from their peers. I personally
learn better this way because to be honest if if I am assigned to read a chapter a night odd are I won't do it. In jigsawing it is necessary to have students take notes during presentations and or have a response to make sure everyone is taking away the information they need. Overall I believe jigsawing to be very beneficial to today's classrooms.

    1. I agree that students need to be taking notes or doing something with the information. If they are just sitting there and listening they will not get all the information they need and may miss out on some great learning opportunities.

    2. I agree, I probably would not read everything I was assigned which is why jigsawing is helpful. Also, like you said students are still taking notes and learning about the reading.

    3. I really liked that you pointed out that jigsawing holds students accountable for doing their part because their classmates depend on them for the information. I did not mention this in my post but I think it is a very good point and very true. No student wants to be the cause of all their classmates to not have the correct information. A quiz afterwards would really motivate the student to have do the jigsawing.

  2. I like jigsawing a lot! I prefer when it is done in small groups better. Each person would have a section of the chapter or book to dissect and get all the important information out of it to report back to the group. I think this way is much easier for students because all of the information from the chapter is out there at once. It might be a slight overload but the connections are much easier to make when everything is in front of you. I would use jigsawing in my classroom for a new chapter in the textbook so the students do not have to read the whole book but only their section. This will make the readings a lot easier.

    1. I like doing jigsawing in smaller groups too! I agree with everything you said and as long as students are getting the important parts of a reading then it is great for a new chapter.

    2. You made a really interesting point about using jigsawing at the beginning of the chapter, I think that would be useful especially as it would give students an outline of the entire chapter; then you would be able to go into depth on each section if necessary.

  3. I really liked the jigsaw exercise, I find it so interesting to see how everyone interprets each chapter in their own way. I think it is a very useful educational tool as it allows students to take responsibility for their own learning and the learning of their classmates. I have found jigsawing very useful in other classes, it works well for subjects that have a lot of content, though I think it can be applied to all content areas.

I have enjoyed the way that we have done the jigsaws so far, I think that it is definitely useful to have the visual aid as it will also help in the future to be able to go back and look at the power points. I think we could do more reflection, either individually or as a class, on how we will apply the knowledge to our future classrooms.

    1. I agree that a visual is very helpful to use in the future because you are able to go back and look over the major points of the chapter. I think if we got in even smaller groups after each presentation and have a small discussion that will help us all get a better understanding because we are no longer just recording the information. We are now using it for ourselves.

    2. I like how you said it allows students to take responsibility for their own learning and the learning of their classmates. That is so important in this exercise and students will realize they need to take the time to do and understand the reading!

  4. I have never done jigsawing until now, but I definitely think it is beneficial for students. Especially when as a teacher, you need to cover a lot of information. I think a visual is necessary for students at any age. It makes it easier on them to record the information and get the main points. It is great to spark conversations and a way for students to explain what they got from the reading. It can make them more confident in presenting in a non-threatening way. It has helped me because instead of having a lot of chapters to read and feeling overwhelmed, I only had to focus on a couple and can learn about the other ones from my classmates, and they can learn about the ones I read.

    1. I agree that it really lowers the workload for the individual student because they only need to zone in and focus on one of the chapters instead of all of them! For students this will be very helpful because it makes class seem much easier and more fun then just reading chapters and taking quizzes.

  5. I really liked what you said! I agree with what you said about allowing students to learn to present in a non-threatening way, I think that having public speaking skills is so useful and doing the jigsaw is a great way to start of with students to build their confidence

  6. I really liked the concept of Jigsawing and I had never done it until this class. It was nice to be able to get the information from both of the books we needed for this class without reading the all of the books, just our chapters we were assigned. I am the type of person that learns best when I teach myself information first not when other teach it to me so that was a little difficult. For my future classroom, I would want to make sure that my students aren't jigsawing such long chapter. Also, I would want to talk about the chapter for a while after the presentation. I would defiantly want to make sure my students have visuals like we did.

    1. I liked how you pointed out to have a class discussion after the presentation. That is something that I feel is vital because without talking about it the other students are just listening and may lose incentive to pay attention if they know they just need to fill out most of the note sheet.
