Blog #2 Tech Tool Demos and Technology Use

So you should've kept track of your daily use one day...share how much you used your device, what you did, and how it made you feel!

THEN, do the following for the "teaching" of the apps/websites on the technology survey:

1. Share what you loved about the tech tool demos...of them overall, of the presentations specifically, and/or what you especially liked about this demo process.

2. Share one thing you learned from each person AND how you envision yourself using this tool (or one of their tools) in your future classroom/profession. The key to this course is to drive you toward implementation and application.

3. Share something you would like to see more of or that you think we should delve deeper into (for example, we are going to do more with QR codes)...what's something else you think we should explore more and in more detail?

Blog by Tuesday, Feb. 7 and respond to each classmate by class on Thursday, Feb. 9.

  1. I used my phone for either texting, snapchat, facebook or games 72 times.

    1. I really liked how everyone got into their tech tool demos. Its exciting to listen to others when they are excited about what they are presenting.

    2. During Peyton's I really liked the quizlet live option and that is something I could totally use as a review session for geometry test. Meghan's QR codes are something that I am already starting to use in other courses to help show that I am tech savvy. Maddie presented her apps with padlet and that is something that I find very cool and I have also been using in other classes. It is very useful to have all the right apps and images all in one place. Kaitlyn's Edpuzzle is something that I definitely want to look more into as well as Museumbox. I think they both can be incorporated into my classroom. Ashley's rubistar is something that will be very helpful to me whenever I need to make rubrics for math projects.

    3. I really would like to explore Edpuzzle or other apps like it. I think that it can be really helpful for all levels of education. Another app/website we did not discuss in class is Desmos. It is more math related but I would like to explore it a lot more because of how useful it could be to me in the future.

    1. On my phone usage, I felt okay with my number because I use my phone for a lot of different things. I do not think my number was ridiculously high for this day and age but I should work on lowering it.

    2. I agree I think edpuzzle would be fun to learn more about. I also agree this was a fun project and I leaned a lot.

    3. I agree, I think that the rubistar will be very helpful for us in the future.

    4. I really enjoyed your presentation and i liked that you shared apps that are useful for teaching math, because that is an area that i need help in. I find it hard to make a math lesson that is fun, but now with the help if NCTM and maybe exploring desmos, i will be set!

    5. I agree I really liked padlet and it is super convenient to have everything in one place. I would also like to see more about Edpuzzle!

    6. I would also like to explore Edpuzzle. I have never heard of it but I am really intrigued by new technology and programs I am not aware of. I think it would be cool if we all got to have short presentations of tech tools like we did with this assignment again.

  2. Phone: I used an app to track how many times I opened my phone a day. It also told me how long I used my phone in a day. I really like how it broke it up so I can see what I spend the most time on my phone. On average I open my phone about 200+ times a day and spend anywhere from 2 to 5 hours on it. I collected data for a week. I also learned I spend most of my time on snapchat and texting. It was very eye opening to see how many times I check my phone a day. I was shocked it was as high as it was because I only text and snapchat a handful of people. This was a very interesting experiment for me and I personally want to try and reduce my phone usage.

    1) I really liked this activity I found it very beneficial to see all sorts of different websites and apps and how they are used. I can’t wait to use them both as a student and a teacher. I really like the idea and all the uses that come along with QR codes. I also really liked the idea of class dojo and museum box. I feel museum box is a fun way to present a project or even a lesson. I think it was class dojo where it shows you if a student has watched an assigned video all the way through I think that is awesome way to check up on your students. I also really like the quizlet and socrative I feel I will recommend those a lot and even use them a lot in my own classroom.

    2) Meghan’s- I learned more way to use a QR code. I didn’t know you could put an event in there and it would automatically sink to your calendar. I might use this in my classroom for homework assignments.
Madison’s – I really like formative and how you could include pictures. I also liked the NCTM site and how it aligned with the standards. I would use formative as a quiz in my classroom.
Ashley’s – I really liked Jumble the whole site was learning for me as I had never seen it before. I think I would use something like this as a warm up or check out in my classroom.
Katilyn’s – I learned on class dojo you can see which students watched an assigned video and if they watched it all the way through.
Payten’s – I liked how quizlet saved the date and results. I learned how to create a quiz to be used in the classroom. I also like how on Kahoot you can add a time limit. You could use this for quizs, test or review tactics in your classroom.
    3) I personally would love to learn more about class dojo because I like how it graded everything and was a good source to share things with your students and see results. I would love to become an expert on this.

    1. I like how you were able to take a little bit from everyone's presentation and be able to somehow implement it in to your future as a student or as a teacher. That is something that I find very important with all of these apps they can even be useful for us right now in our own classes and not just our future classrooms.

    2. I agree i would also like to learn more about class dojo, It looks really useful and when i explored it more it seems to really encourage class community and positivity. it also allows students to post their work, in the form of images, which parents can view, which is really cool and ensures that it is a safe community where students can share work

    3. I agree with what you said about learning and using QR codes in your classroom. I have seen QR codes around schools and I never knew how to use them.

    4. This definitely did show me a lot and I like how you said the tools will be used as a student and a teacher. Class dojo does seem interesting and a good tool to use in an elementary classroom.

  3. Phone: When I tracked my phone usage I only used my phone for an hour and twenty-five minutes. I would spend a little time here and there with the occasional snapchat and checking up on facebook. It seemed like I used my phone a lot, but I was only on it for a minute or two at a time and then I would put it away. I was not shocked at all about how much I use my phone, if I had the choice I would just leave it at home.

    1. I really liked doing the demos, it stressed me out less knowing that I did not have to be an expert on all of the websites and apps, so that I could just focus on the ones that I was presenting. It also allowed me to really dig deep into the websites instead of just looking at them quickly trying to get them finshed.

    2. Meghan- I really liked learning about QR codes. I have seen them around a few schools, but I was never sure how to make or use them.
Maddie- I had never heard of padlet before, so thank you for sharing that with us. I can use padlet in my classroom to keep/share links with my students.
Madison- I really like how you showed us all of the cool features that NCTM has, sometimes I forget that websites like those can be so helpful when it comes to planning a lesson.
Ashley- I really liked that you showed us a website that has learning games on it that the students could use in their freetime. Sometimes I forget that it is important to allow students to have that option during the day.
Kaitlyn- I liked learning about MuseumBox, becasue I have tried to use it in the past and I got so frustrated and couldn't figure it out, but your presentation helped a ton.

    3. I would really like to explore Nearpod. No one gave a presentation on it,but I think it is something, as future teachers, we should know how to use.

    1. Peyton, you said something that I think is so accurate! We all have tried to use a new app at one time or another and if we do not get it we give up. This happens to me a lot but, these demos showed me a lot of apps that I have struggled on before used well. I learned so much from the whole class when they presented their tools!

      Delete
    2. I would also love to learn near pod as I believe it will be super beneficial to us as teachers. I also agree that a lot of these apps will allow us as teachers to give our students options throughout the class day!

      Delete
    3. I hadn’t heard of nearpod before you mentioned it so I googled it and it looks really useful, I would also want to learn more about how to use it.
I have experienced some teachers who do not want to share their presentations with the students because they fear that it will prevent them from listening or even showing up to class. I think that nearpod is a great alternative for theses teachers as it allows students to edit the presentations and make notes. In addition the teacher is able to assess and grade their contributions. This allows the teacher to ensure that student s are interacting and absorbing the material and generating useful notes.

    4. I would also like to learn more about nearpod and how to use it. I agree with you about NCTM and it would be useful for math lessons!

  4. I wasn't on my phone as much as I thought I would be. In the morning I responded to one text when I woke up and then went straight to class. Throughout the day I spent about two hours on it on various apps like facebook, twitter, Instagram, and snapchat. I also played Candy Crush before I went to sleep. I think I spent most of my time on facebook because there is always something new to look at. I would like to be on my phone less than that and I think it is something I will work on.
    1. I loved seeing the tech tool demos because I have never heard of most of those websites/apps. It helped me learn a lot and become a better navigator of these tools. I think actually going through them and seeing what the websites looked like made it a better presentation.

    2. Maddie- I liked all of the apps you shared and the sesame street one had good learning games for students of young age and it is something they would enjoy. If I teach younger kids I could see myself using this. Peyton- I loved Kahoot and how we actually got to take a quiz. It is good for a review and a way to see if students are understanding the material. Meghan- The teaching of the QR code really helped. The website you showed us is an easy way of making the codes and I will definitely want to use that in my classroom. Madison-NCTM seems to have a lot of good lessons and games. I would use this for teaching math since it lines up with the standards and it is fun for the students. Kaitlyn- I liked all of your apps and I think MuseumBox seemed like a really good website. I learned a lot of new things on classdojo and that would be a good way to keep an assessment of your students.
    3. Something I would want to explore more is Explain Everything. I like the idea of the interactive whiteboard and I think there are a lot of features in that website I would want to learn about.

    2. For me, I kept track of my phone usage on a Saturday which was spent not doing much, so I think how much or less you spend on your phone also depends on how busy your day is, or in my case, how boring you day is. When listening to the tech demos, I agree, I have not heard of most of the apps, but they were all really cool!

    3. I agree that it would be cool to explore Explain Everything more as a class or a Tech Tuesday. For me, it was one of those that did not click immediately and I wished I had someone to help work through the app with me!

    4. I agree that this presentation allowed me to learn some new apps and ow to navigate them. Before this assignment I had not heard of many of the apps and websites we talked about.

    5. I with you when you talked about how you have never heard of some of the apps. It is really hard to use an app you have never heard about in your classroom, because you didn't even know it existed.

    6. i agree that Kahoot is so useful! I also plan on using it in my classroom, i think that its so useful to see what students have understood, it can be used for a pre or post assessment

  5. I tracked my weekly battery use from Sunday 29th Feb to 5th Feb. The most frequently used app was Safari which was mostly for Facebook and random internet searches, that only used 30% of my battery, which is not bad for a week. The second app that I used the most was WhatsApp; this is a free app that allows you to message and voice/ video call people for free. I use it to keep in contact with my friends and family all around the world. This app only used 18% of my battery. So I was able to conclude that over a week I only use 48% of my battery for social media/ messaging,
I was not surprised by my results as I know that I do not use my phone a lot, I really only use it to contact family and friends and for Facebook. This may be because I do not have Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, YikYak or any other social media app, other than Facebook. So I don’t use my phone as much as someone else my age might.

    1. 1.I really enjoyed the tech tool demos and I felt that I learnt so much! I liked that we were able to lean specific ways of implementing the apps in a classroom setting and that we were able to learn how to use the apps from our classmates as that was less intimidating. It was interesting to see everyone’s unique way of doing their app demos.
In the process of preparing my presentation and learning how to use the apps I was able to learn a lot of useful sills. I eventually realized that with apps and some types of technology you can’t be afraid to try and make mistakes, once you get passed the fear of making a mistake it’s a lot easier.

    2. 2. Ashley :I was able to learn a lot and I think that all of her apps are very applicable, especially for a lower elementary teacher. I know that I will defiantly use Rubistar for making rubrics; I really liked the different layouts to choose from. I think that could use all of the fun educational games, such as kidspiraton and jumble. I think that they are useful for fun games to help students practice different skills. Though I would not use it all the time, as it was pointed out that it can be hard to control student activity in these devices and it can lead to students not concentrating
Maddie- Your apps and websites were so much FUN! It was fun to play around on the educational game sites. The website that I liked the most was Sesame Street as it will allow students to do activities in Spanish or English, which is so great for differentiating learning and helping students who may be second language English speakers. Fun brain is also a great tool for differentiation; it is very useful that you can choose the grade level as this will allow for all students to take their time to complete activities. I also really liked your padlet, it’s a really useful for presenting information and making it interactive
Madison: I liked all of your apps, and it was so much fun to get to know all of your cute animals, I really liked that you were able to add pictures to your quiz on Formative; I will definitely be using that site. My favorite app was explain everything, it sounds amazing and as Dr. bum said it helps to solve big problems of students not being able to do their work because they are sick. It is amazing that you can live stream a lesson and draw different items. It is great for differentiating learning and it allows students to gain independence. It teachers children to be responsible if they are able to learn on their own and is perfect if someone does not understand a particular concept discussed in class.
Peyton: I had so much fun doing the Kahoot, it seems to be a very useful app. I know that I would use in in my classroom. It really appeals to visual learners, all of the colors and shapes for the quiz were really fun. I think I would probably use this just foe a fun activity as the results were being displayed so I would not want to use it for an activity where students may judge others performance on the quiz. I also like quizlet live that was really fun and useful for generating results.
Kaitlyn: Your apps were really fun and you had lots of different apps. I really liked the look of the museum box; it is such a unique way of presenting information. I would defiantly use this in my future classroom for a history or social science project. I have already enjoyed using Flipboard with our class group and I think it’s a really fun way of getting information and keeping yourself informed. I also really liked the little bird tales.

    3. 3. I think we should explore Museum box more it seems like a really useful tool and I would love to learn more about how to use it so that I could use it with mu future students.

    4. I like how you pointed out that I have cute animals haha! But really, I think Explain Everything is a really cool app and we should all definitely learn more about it. I really like it for the fact that it is web based and app based and it is for both apple and android.

    5. I agree with everything you said! I also wanted to say after reading your post I learned what whatsapp is that is awesome that you can text anyone from anywhere in the world for free!

    6. I agree I also really liked Little Bird Tales, especially because it allows the students to write their own stories.

    7. I agree that once you get passed the fear of making mistakes it is a lot easier. It is something you just have to try and it may work out great! I also think it is fun to play the educational games and great for students to have that option sometimes.

  7. When keeping track of my daily tech use I was not surprised at all. I spend most of my time on snapchat and music. Lately I have been spending more time on other apps like Facebook or Instagram, but I only do those in little bits which don't account for much of my time where as I listen to music all day and I use snapchat to talk to my friends instead of imessage.

    1. I really liked the tech demos overall. I like how, as a class, we all have a variety of apps ranging from games to student and teacher based apps. For those that had quizzes I really enjoyed taking them in class, it really helped when learning how to work the app.

    2. Ashley: I too really liked Rubistar. This is such a good tool for teachers. I think one of my favorite parts about this app was the feature you shared that allowed you to look at other teachers rubrics and change them to what works for your class. This is will be great because teachers often learn from others but this will be good so you can make the project better suited for your class and change some minor things.
Madison: I really liked the formative app. It was fun and engaging. You could use this as a pre test to get the images in the student's minds. I also liked how they didn't show the results to the whole class, this is good because students won't get discouraged because they can't see how others did.
Maddie: Padlet is so cool!! Before you demonstrated it I have never seen or heard of it before. I like how it can keep so many different apps or files together and organized. Students can easily use this but teachers can use it too while giving homework or teaching a lesson.
Peyton: I really liked quizlet live. I have used quizlet before but never quizlet live. I had no idea that there was this option. Such a great review game or study option.
Meghan: Your QR codes were so cool! They were my favorite app presentation. I liked how much you could do with them, everything from sending a message to scheduling an appointment. I could definitely see myself using these the most in my future career.

    3. In class I think we should look up apps that can be used in various classrooms or careers. I think if we find apps that have various uses in various grade levels, subjects, or even fields more people will find more meaningful uses for of them.

    1. Kaitlyn, I liked how you pointed out that we should look at apps that relate to other fields as well. I think that is very important because there could be an app out there that is not thought of as educational and we could be missing out on it because we are only focused on educational based apps!

      Delete
    2. I also liked taking the quizes in class it made me learn both how the teachers use it and the students! I also agree should look at apps within different fields!

      Delete
    3. I like how you talked about how we learned about the apps and websites by using them. It halps us to experience the apps as both educators and students.

      Delete
    4. I think you made a really useful point about using padlet to schedule homework for your students, i hadn't thought of using it for that! Its a really good idea as it ensures that students are organized. You could also use it in a counseling setting and have students create a " positive energy" padlet, with encouraging activities/ pictures/ videos that they could access when feeling down.

    5. I agree taking the quizzes helped get more familiar with the app. I also liked the formative app and it will be good for the students!

  8. I kept track of my technology use in one day on a Saturday. I was not surprised that I was on my phone a lot. When I get bored I automatically go through Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and Twitter. I look at those side 150 times that Saturday that I kept track of my technology use.

    1. I didn't get to see many of the tech tool demos because of basketball. Of the ones I did see, I really liked hearing how to use the tool and being showed how to also use it. I am a very hands on person. Therefore, being showed the tech tool help me to feel comfortable to use it on my own.
    2. As far as I can remember, I only recall being in class for Peyton's tech tool demo. I have used quizlet live before but I had forgotten how it works and I had never made one on my own. After listening to Peyton, I can now make a quizlet on my own and feel very comfortable using this tool.
3.I really liked when we did these short presentations in class. I think it would be really cool to do them again. I wish I was more up to date with the newest technology in the classroom. This assignment helped me become more aware of the newest trend in technology in the classroom.
